What a UAE work visa actually involves

Talentzkarft Team · Updated September 2026 · 8 min read

Planning to work in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE? Here is a plain-language guide to the visa types, how the work visa process runs, how long you can stay, and the local laws that catch new arrivals out.

1. Main types of UAE visa

VisaWho it's forHow long
Employment (work) visaAnyone with a job offer from a UAE company. The employer sponsors you.Usually 2 years, renewable
Job seeker visit visaSkilled people and recent top-university graduates coming to look for work. No sponsor needed.60, 90 or 120 days, one trip
Green visaSelf-sponsored skilled employees (degree + roughly AED 15,000/month salary), freelancers and self-employed.5 years, renewable
Golden visaInvestors (e.g. about AED 2 million in property), top professionals, talented people and outstanding graduates.10 years, renewable
Family / dependent visaSpouse, children and sometimes parents, sponsored by a resident who meets the salary rules.Linked to the sponsor's visa
Tourist / visit visaHolidays and short visits. You may not work on it.Usually 30–90 days

With a job offer, you need an employment visa. With no offer yet, the job seeker visa lets you attend interviews in person; if you get hired, the employer can usually change your status inside the UAE.

2. How the work visa process works

The process is always started by your employer, usually through their PRO (government relations officer). Your job is to send documents quickly and attend two appointments.

  1. Job offer. You sign an offer letter. Check salary, job title and benefits carefully — they must match your final contract.
  2. Work permit. The employer applies to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
  3. Entry permit. An electronic entry visa is emailed to you. You fly to the UAE on it (or your status is changed if you are already there).
  4. Medical fitness test. At a government-approved centre — a blood test and chest X-ray to screen for infectious diseases.
  5. Emirates ID. You give fingerprints and a photo. Apply within 15 days of arriving; the card arrives by courier.
  6. Labour contract. Your contract is registered with MOHRE. Read it before signing — this registered contract is what counts in any dispute.
  7. Residence visa. Your residency is issued (now digitally, linked to your Emirates ID). You are fully legal to live and work.

Important: after you enter on the entry permit, all remaining steps must be finished within 60 days.

3. How long it takes, how long you can stay, and cost

4. Key job rules under UAE labour law

5. Resigning, cancellation and the grace period

6. Strict UAE laws every expat must know

💊 Drugs & medicines

Zero tolerance. Even some prescription and over-the-counter medicines (strong painkillers, sleeping pills, ADHD and some cold medicines) are controlled. Carry medicines in original packs with a doctor's prescription, declare them, and check the UAE list before you travel. Penalties can include jail, heavy fines and deportation.

🍷 Alcohol

Only allowed in licensed venues such as hotels and restaurants. Drinking or being drunk in public is illegal, and drink-driving is punished severely.

📱 Social media & privacy

Do not photograph or film people without permission, or post others' photos online. Insulting or defaming people, companies or the country online is a criminal offence.

👔 Public behaviour & dress

Dress modestly in public places, especially malls and government offices (shoulders and knees covered). Avoid public arguments, swearing and rude gestures — they can lead to fines or arrest.

🌙 Religion & Ramadan

Respect Islam and local customs. During Ramadan, be considerate — avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in public during fasting hours and follow any venue rules.

💳 Money & debts

Unpaid loans, credit cards and bounced cheques can lead to civil cases and travel bans that stop you leaving the country. Keep your finances clean.

7. Quick checklist before you fly

Need help with your UAE move? Our overseas documentation team can check your papers, attestation and visa file.

This guide is for general information only, based on UAE government and published sources as of September 2026. Rules change often — always confirm with official sources: u.ae, MOHRE, ICP or GDRFA Dubai.

Resumes

5 resume mistakes that cost you interviews — and how to fix them

Talentzkarft Team · Updated September 2026 · 6 min read

Most resumes are judged twice: first by software (an Applicant Tracking System, or ATS) that reads and ranks it, then by a recruiter who skims it in a few seconds. These five mistakes cause most rejections at one of those two stages — and each one takes less than 10 minutes to fix.

Mistake 1: A fancy design the ATS can't read

The problem: Tables, text boxes, columns, icons, photos-as-graphics and text in headers or footers look nice, but the software turns your resume into plain text. Anything inside those elements can come out jumbled or disappear — so your skills or contact details may never be seen.

How to fix it
  • Use a single-column layout with simple headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education.
  • Stick to standard fonts such as Arial or Calibri, size 10–12.
  • Put your name, phone, email and city at the top of the page body — not in the header.
  • Send a Word file (.docx) or a text-based PDF, as the job ad asks. Never a scanned image.

Mistake 2: Sending the same resume to every job

The problem: Recruiters search the ATS using words from their own job ad. If your resume says "handled office work" and the ad says "office administration" and "vendor management", you may not appear in the search at all.

How to fix it
  • Read the job ad and underline the skills and job titles it repeats.
  • Use those exact words — where they are true for you — in your summary, skills and experience.
  • Add a short Key skills list near the top.
  • Keep one master resume, then make a quick tailored copy for each application.

Mistake 3: Listing duties instead of results

The problem: "Responsible for…" tells a recruiter what the job was, not how well you did it. Hiring managers look for proof of impact.

✗ Before

Responsible for managing office staff and vendors.

✓ After

Managed a team of 12 support staff and 20+ vendors; renegotiated contracts to cut annual office costs by 15%.

How to fix it
  • Start each point with an action verb: Led, Reduced, Improved, Built, Trained, Delivered.
  • Add a number wherever you can — people, money, time saved, targets, percentages.
  • Aim for 3–5 strong points for recent jobs, fewer for older ones.

Mistake 4: Typos, messy dates and an unprofessional email

The problem: A single spelling mistake makes many hiring managers stop reading. Dates written in different styles ("Jan 2022", "2020-21", "3/2019") confuse the ATS when it calculates your experience. An email like coolboy99@… looks careless.

How to fix it
  • Run a spell-check, then read the resume aloud — you'll catch errors your eyes skip.
  • Use one date style everywhere, for example Jan 2022 – Present.
  • Use a simple email: firstname.lastname@gmail.com.
  • Make sure your LinkedIn profile matches your resume — recruiters often check both.

Mistake 5: A vague summary and details nobody asked for

The problem: Lines like "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation" could belong to anyone. Long resumes packed with hobbies, full address, father's name, religion or marital status push your real strengths down the page. And summaries copied straight from an AI tool without editing can sound generic.

✗ Before

Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills.

✓ After

Administration manager with 10+ years running offices of 80+ staff — budgets, vendors and compliance. Looking to bring cost-control and team leadership to a growing company in Dubai.

How to fix it
  • Write a 2–3 line summary: who you are + your strongest result + the job you want.
  • Keep it to 1 page for freshers and 2 pages for experienced professionals.
  • Skip personal details unless the job or country asks for them. Add a photo only where it's expected (many Gulf employers do ask for one).
  • If you use AI to draft, rewrite it in your own words with your real numbers.

Interviews

How to answer "Tell me about yourself"

Talentzkarft Team · Updated September 2026 · 6 min read

It's usually the very first question — and it sets the tone for the whole interview. It is not a request for your life story. It's your chance to explain, in about a minute, why you are a good fit for this job.

The simple formula: Present → Past → Future

Keep your answer to 60–90 seconds and follow three short steps:

1Present15–20 sec

Who you are now — your current role or studies, and one thing you're proud of.

2Past20–30 sec

How you got here — 1 or 2 experiences or skills that match this job. Not your whole history.

3Future15–20 sec

Why this job — what excites you about this role or company, and why it's your natural next step.

Tip: if you're early in your career, "Past → Present → Future" (education first) can feel more natural. The idea is the same.

Example for a fresher

"I recently completed my B.Com from PSG College in Coimbatore, where I focused on accounting and finance. (Present) During my final year I did a three-month internship with a CA firm, where I prepared GST returns for 15 small businesses and learned Tally and Excel reconciliation. (Past) I'm now looking to start my career as an accounts executive, and I'm excited about this role because your team handles clients across different industries — it's a great place to build strong practical skills. (Future)"

Example for an experienced professional

"I'm an administration manager with over 10 years of experience, currently running operations for a manufacturing company with around 80 staff. (Present) Before this I managed facilities and vendor contracts for a retail chain, where I cut annual office costs by 15% by renegotiating supplier agreements. (Past) I'm now looking for a larger role where I can lead a bigger admin team, and this position stands out because of your expansion plans across multiple sites. (Future)"

Example for an overseas (Gulf) job

"I'm an HR executive with five years of experience in recruitment and onboarding, currently hiring for a 300-member workforce in Chennai. (Present) I've handled bulk hiring drives and worked with multinational clients, so I'm used to diverse teams and tight deadlines. (Past) I'm excited about this role in Dubai because it's a fast-growing, multicultural workplace — exactly where I want to grow my career over the coming years. (Future)"

Replace the details with your own true facts and numbers — never copy an example word for word.

Common mistakes to avoid

✗ Don't

Start with where you were born, your family or hobbies. Repeat your resume line by line. Talk for 3–4 minutes. Say "What would you like to know?" Complain about your current employer.

✓ Do

Lead with your current role or studies. Pick 1–2 achievements with numbers. Connect everything to this job. Finish on why you're excited. Smile and keep eye contact.

How to prepare in 15 minutes

  1. Read the job ad and circle the 2–3 skills it asks for most.
  2. Write one sentence for each part — Present, Past, Future — using those skills.
  3. Add one number (team size, results, savings, targets) to make it memorable.
  4. Say it aloud with a timer. Aim for 60–90 seconds.
  5. Memorise the structure, not the words, so it sounds natural, not rehearsed.
  6. Practise with a friend — or record yourself on your phone and listen back.
